People often say it is quite hard to describe the feeling they get from the needles, but that it is not at all what they expected! Acupuncture needles are very fine so are usually not even felt on insertion. The sensation felt at a ‘stimulated’ acupuncture point (when it makes contact with the Qi) can be described as dull, heavy, achy or tingly. Some people simply get a general feeling of warmth and relaxation.

It is advisable to rest and eat well after an acupuncture session. There should be an avoidance of drugs and alcohol 24 hours before and after, and it is important you do not come for treatment on an empty stomach. Some people experience a rush of energy afterwards, or tiredness, or both! All these are normal reactions of your body adjusting to the change in Qi. While some people improve immediately, it is more usual to experience gradual improvement over a series of treatments. Factors such as the length of time the condition has been present, and whether or not the cause has been resolved, will also have a strong effect on the outcome.
